Week 25: Standardisation isn’t bureaucracy - it’s stability

What follows is not an argument for more paperwork. It is an argument for fewer surprises. Standardisation, in this context, is about behaviour – what gets checked, what gets recorded, what gets shared – not about who owns the form.

Standardisation has a branding problem. Say the word in most engineering rooms and you can feel shoulders tighten. It is associated with paperwork, compliance exercises, tick boxes that nobody believes in and rules written by people who have never stood on a roof in driving rain trying to make sense of someone else’s decisions. In markets, standardisation is often framed as the enemy of progress, the thing that slows innovation and frustrates professionals who “know what they’re doing.”

But infrastructure plays by different rules. In infrastructure, standardisation is not about control, it is about stability.

The grid does not care who installed a system, which brand of panel was chosen or how proud someone was of their workmanship. It cares about behaviour. It cares about predictability. It cares about whether assets connected to it behave in ways that can be understood, anticipated and planned around. When millions of small generators begin feeding a system that was designed around certainty, variation becomes a risk multiplier.

In a decentralised world, variation shows up everywhere. One contractor tests thoroughly, another barely at all. One captures detailed photographic evidence, another relies on handwritten notes. One reports insulation resistance values consistently, another describes things as “satisfactory.” One understands connector compatibility, another assumes all MC4-looking things are interchangeable. None of these choices feel dramatic in isolation. Taken together, they create a landscape where no two systems can be compared with confidence.

That is what makes variation dangerous. Not because people are careless, but because the system has no boundaries. Standardisation does not remove judgement; it gives judgement a frame to operate within. It sets the minimum behaviour that must always occur, regardless of who turns up on site or how experienced they are.

From the grid’s perspective, this matters profoundly. If every rooftop system is tested, documented, labelled and inspected differently, then the grid has no reliable way of understanding how behind-the-meter generation behaves in aggregate. Planning becomes guesswork. Risk assessment becomes conservative by default. Opportunities to defer reinforcement or rely on embedded generation are quietly lost, not because solar cannot be trusted, but because its behaviour cannot be modelled with confidence. Standardisation is what turns millions of individual rooftops into something that looks, to the grid, like a coherent population rather than a statistical fog.

For the workforce, standardisation does something equally important. It makes competence transferable. A shared method allows technicians to step into unfamiliar sites without starting from zero. It allows engineers to trust the data they are reviewing, rather than mentally discounting it based on who produced it. It allows asset owners to understand reports without needing translation. It allows insurers to see patterns rather than anecdotes and it allows conversations to happen between peers, regardless of experience level, because everyone is speaking the same technical language.

This becomes critical in a sector defined by volatility. Contractors will continue to scale up and down with policy cycles. Teams will rotate. People will move on. Experience will not accumulate neatly in one place. The only thing that can remain stable in that environment is the method itself. Standardisation is how knowledge survives turnover. It is how systems retain memory even when people change.

There is a temptation to see standardisation as restrictive, particularly in a young industry that values speed and ingenuity. In reality, it is liberating. It removes the need for everyone to reinvent the basics on every site. It frees experienced professionals to focus on judgement and diagnosis rather than reconstruction. It allows junior staff to work safely without relying on intuition they have not yet developed and it gives the grid something it can work with: consistency.

This is not about freezing innovation or forcing uniformity of design. Rooftop systems will always vary in layout, components and context. What must not vary is how we assess them, how we record their condition and how we communicate their behaviour. Standardisation is the quiet infrastructure that sits beneath decentralisation, allowing it to mature from a collection of projects into a system that can be relied upon.

In energy, stability is not the absence of change. It is the presence of shared rules that allow change to happen safely. That is what standardisation really is. Not bureaucracy. Not red tape. Stability.
